Walthamstow
This air-breaking event took place on Walthamstow Marshes on July 23rd 1909.
The intrepid Alliot Verdon Roe built his Avro No 1 biplane from a wooden frame, wrapping paper from his brother’s factory and a 9hp motorcycle engine.
Bearing the sponsor’s message ‘Bullseye braces keep your trousers up’ (courtesy of his father’s essential item), the makeshift plane did stay up: flying ten feet above the ground for a distance of about 900 feet at 25 mph.
Two days later, Bleriot crossed the channel and official indifference turned to interest. Roe moved his mini factory to Wembley Park and became a major player in the aircraft business.
His historic plane was presented to the Science Museum in 1925.
